Bring Your Original Mirror Back to Life

Over time, the reflective coating on a mirror can deteriorate, creating black spots, cloudy areas, foxing and a faded or uneven reflection.

Replacing the complete mirror is not always the best option, particularly when the original glass forms part of an antique frame, vintage piece of furniture or treasured family heirloom.

Our mirror re-silvering service removes the deteriorated reflective backing and applies a fresh silver mirror finish to the original glass.

Mirrors We Can Assess for Re-Silvering

  • Antique and vintage mirrors
  • Decorative wall mirrors
  • Period and overmantel mirrors
  • Family heirlooms
  • Mirrors fitted into furniture
  • Unusual, shaped or bespoke mirror glass
  • Classic vehicle mirrors and headlight reflectors

Every mirror is assessed individually because its condition, age, glass quality and existing backing can affect whether it is suitable for restoration.

Our Mirror Re-Silvering Process

01

Mirror Assessment

We inspect the original glass, reflective layer and protective backing to determine its condition and whether re-silvering is suitable.

02

Existing Coating Removed

The deteriorated silver layer and old protective backing are carefully removed from the rear of the original glass.

03

Glass Prepared and Re-Silvered

The glass is thoroughly cleaned and prepared before a new reflective silver layer is professionally applied.

04

Protected and Finished

The new reflective surface is covered with a durable protective backing before the restored mirror is prepared for return.

Retain the Character of the Original Glass

Re-silvering allows the original mirror glass to be retained while renewing its reflective surface.

This can be especially important for mirrors with unusual shapes, historic significance, original bevelled edges or sentimental value.

The process renews the reflective coating. Existing scratches, chips, imperfections within the glass or damage to the surrounding frame may remain and will be discussed during the assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is mirror re-silvering?

Mirror re-silvering is the process of removing a deteriorated reflective coating from the back of the glass and replacing it with a new silver mirror layer and protective backing.

Can the original mirror glass be retained?

Yes. Retaining the original glass is one of the main benefits of re-silvering. The glass must first be assessed to confirm that it is suitable for restoration.

Does re-silvering remove black spots and foxing?

Re-silvering replaces the deteriorated reflective coating responsible for many black spots, cloudy areas and foxing. Scratches, chips or marks within the glass itself may remain visible.

Can every old mirror be re-silvered?

Not every mirror will be suitable. Its condition, thickness, shape, existing damage and construction must be checked before restoration begins.
